Fa La La Fairies: A – Z
Aerial Fairies
(Pronounced Air-ee-ul)
The Aerial Fairies are a group of Fa La La Fairies who work year-round. They use their gold glitter dust to cause Santa’s reindeer and sleigh to fly. Young reindeer can’t control their flying, so the Aerial Fairies teach them to take off, to land, and to synchronize their flights so that they sleigh doesn’t experience turbulence. We can’t have presents bouncing out of the sleigh now, can we?
Ambrosia Fairies
(Pronounced am-bro-zuh)
The Ambrosia Fairies are a group of Fa La La Fairies, or Christmas Fairies, that delight in making Christmas food taste so lovely every year. They sprinkle their honey dust over candy canes, chocolate Santas, and hot cocoa all during December. They meet together on Christmas Eve to sprinkle all of the food that Santa will put in stockings.
Then, the flit from kitchen to kitchen during the long Midnight Hour, sprinkling their special fairy dust over the ingredients that will become Christmas dinner.
The Ambrosia dust enhances the taste of the food so that everyone agrees that it’s the best meal of the entire year. It causes a happy peace to pass over families as they eat. Those who consume too much of the Ambrosia dust may become sleepy and need an afternoon nap on Christmas day.
Cupid Fairies
Named after the original Cupid, Cupid Fairies are Fa La La Fairies who make some sprigs of mistletoe magical. Many humans and fairies alike fall in love at Christmastime because of the work of the Cupid Fairies.
Engineer Fairies
Engineer Fairies are on call Christmas Eve night to fix anything that may go wrong with the sleigh as Santa is flying it. Throughout the year, they use information from the Scout Fairies to help the Elves replicate modern technology.
Increasingly, the Engineer Fairies have worked closely with the Obliterites to find and delete footage of Santa and his sleigh from the internet. If my real identity is discovered, it will likely be an Engineer Fairy who unmasks me.
Folly Fairies
Not all Christmas Fairies are helpful. Folly Fairies are Fa La La Fairies who set out to cause chaos in the weeks and months leading up to Christmas.
Most Folly Fairies aren’t necessarily mean. They don’t have a special gift that’s of any use to Santa, so many of them are just bored. Causing people to argue over the last of a particular toy or over a parking spot alleviates the boredom for a bit.
Some Folly Fairies are jealous of other Fa La La Fairies, though. Over the centuries, that jealousy has grown into something somewhat sinister for a few.
Jolly Fairies
The Jolly Fairies being their work in November, spreading Christmas Cheer throughout the world. When schools break for winter holidays, sometimes Scout fairies get to help with this task. Jolly Fairies sprinkle a topaz colored dust over Christmas lights, window displays, and lawn displays. Everyone who see lights or displays that have been dusted by the Jollies will be filled with wonder and merriment.
Midnight Fairies
Perhaps the loveliest of all the Fa La La Fairies are the Midnight Fairies, whose job is to twinkle high above the clouds on Christmas Eve Night, They use their special starlight dust to stretch the Midnight Hour for as long as necessary for Santa to visit the homes of all of the good little boys and girls.
Nocturns
(Pronounced Knock-turns)
The Nocturns dance ahead of Santa’s sleigh, singing a lullaby so soft that no human can hear it. But no human child can resist the lullaby’s effect. Even those who are determined to stay awake will blink a few times before their eyes flutter closed. They drift off to sleep just before Santa’s sleigh reaches their neighborhoods.
The lullaby that the Nocturns sing always cause most children to dream joyous dreams of sugar plums, gifts, and Christmas magic.
Obliterites
(Pronounced Oh-blit-er-ites)
The Obliterites are Christmas fairies erase the memories of boys and girls who sneak a peak of Santa on Christmas Eve. If catch a glimpse of Santa, his sleigh, or reindeer, the Obliterites will dust you with their glittery forgetting powder. They flutter behind Santa’s sleigh, looking for any sign that someone has spotted Santa.
They’re also the reason most grown ups stop believing in Santa. People “forget to believe” because of the Obliterites. It’s harder to erase the memories of grown ups, so they dust them when they’re young.
With the advent of recent technology, like Ring security systems, their job has become much harder. They can usually use the Midnight hour to erase or blur all of the images and video footage of Santa, but sometimes, they miss something. Video footage being leaked to social media or YouTube is a source of embarrassment and dismay for the Obliterites.
Scout Fairies
Scout Fairies are Fa La La Fairies who are young enough to pass for middle school or high school students. Their job is to blend in, to observe human teens and pre-teens, and to report back to the North Pole. They help ensure that gifts from the North Pole are modern.
Be nice to new students! They may be Scout Fairies in disguise.
When Scout Fairies “graduate” from high school, they return to their beloved home on Winter Wonderland Lane. There, they will learn the skills necessary to become an Aerial Fairy, an Ambrosia Fairy, a Cupid Fairy, an Engineer Fairy, or one of the other fairies who help make Christmas Christmas-y. Those who don’t take this training seriously may end up as a Folly Fairy.
Snow Fairies
There are fewer snow fairies than any other group of Fa La La Fairies. The Snow Fairies sprinkle their snowdust on clouds over towns, bringing a White Christmas to some lucky places.
Toy Fairies
Like Aerial Fairies, Toy Fairies work year round. They don’t make the toys. The Elves won’t let them. They do work alongside the Elves in Santa’s workshop, however.
Some children believe that toys come alive when they sleep. This isn’t entirely true. The toys you buy from a store are just toys.
But the toys made in Santa’s workshop are special. They love children and want to be the best friend of a little boy or girl. Toy Fairies know the hearts of these toys, and they have the ability to see which toys will be loved by which girls and which boys.
When the Elves finish a line of toys, a Toy Fairy picks up each toy, closes their eyes, and know who the toy belongs to. They then carefully place each toy in Santa’s pack. Their rainbow glitter will ensure that the toy will be delivered to the right child.
Toy Fairies are so accurate at predicting the bond between a child and a toy that parents and grandparents will look back on memories of a special toy with a sigh, wishing they still had the toy they had loved so well as a child.
